Why I Decided to Write a Book on the Science of Wrestling

ブログ・書籍について

“Is there really any point in trying to scientifically analyze wrestling?”

To be honest, that question crossed my mind more than once.

As an athlete and later as a coach, I often found myself wondering.
Yes, some wrestlers are undoubtedly strong. But very few people can clearly explain why they’re strong.

People often say it’s about feel, instinct, or timing.
And I agree—those things matter a lot.
Even I’ve caught myself saying, “Yeah… maybe it really just comes down to talent.”

But deep down, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there had to be more.
That some shared traits or principles might be uncovered—if only we looked hard enough.

A World Where “The Winner Is Always Right”

Unlike sports like track or swimming, where time provides an objective standard,
wrestling is a sport where “the winner is right.”

Some wrestlers shoot in explosively from a distance.
Others prefer close contact and gradual setup.
Fighting styles and strategies vary widely.

That’s what makes wrestling so interesting—and so difficult to study scientifically.

But I’ve come to believe that this very difficulty is what makes the challenge worth pursuing.
Because in a sport with many ways to win, there may be deeper truths hidden beneath the surface.

The Meaning Behind This Book

In December 2025, I plan to publish a book on Kindle:
“Decoding the Strength of Japanese Wrestling.”

In this book, I explore questions like:

  • Why is Japanese wrestling so strong?

  • What truly sets top wrestlers apart?

I’ll approach these questions through a blend of history, techniques, tactics, and data.

Of course, there are already great books written by accomplished wrestlers and coaches that cover technical details in depth.
If you’re looking for specific moves and how-tos, those resources are highly recommended.

My goal is different.

Shedding Light on What’s Hard to See

Rather than focusing only on individual techniques, I aim to take a broader view of wrestling:

  • History

  • Body composition

  • Training principles

But especially—
Reflexes
Grip fighting concepts
Tactical thinking

These are all “hard-to-see” elements that rarely get the spotlight.

And yet, they may hold the key to unlocking what makes wrestlers truly strong.

That’s why this book attempts to scientifically explore the strength of wrestling—
from angles that have largely gone untouched.

In Closing

I may not arrive at perfect answers.
But I believe the challenge is meaningful precisely because it’s difficult.

If this article sparks even a little curiosity—
“If wrestling could be analyzed scientifically, that’d be kind of cool…”
—then I’d be thrilled.

On this note, I’ll keep sharing behind-the-scenes updates on the book,
as well as reflections on wrestling’s hidden techniques and untold stories.

Thanks for reading—and I hope you’ll follow along.
